Traffic regulations and driving a car – Spain
Driving a rental car in is not that difficult but as in most countries there are parking and traffic regulations you must abide. It is better to learn the most important parking and traffic regulations before your trip to avoid fines and make your trip safe. If you are planning to rent a car in the larger cities such as you had better plan ahead. You might have trouble finding parking and there are often queues especially during rush hour. Parking fees are often cheaper in Spanish cities than other main European cities, but parking spaces are hard to find.
Driving Tips for Spain
Carrying of a warning triangle and a spare pair of glasses if you normally wear glasses is obligatory. Moving around by car in major cities might be nerve-wracking and expensive. Fines for improper parking are high, sometimes <€85. There are two types of highways in Spain : autopistas or motorways and autovías. Most autopistas are toll roads while autovías are generally free of charge.
Mobile phones while driving:
On-the-spot fines of up to around £160 (€200) are dished out for those caught driving while using a mobile. Mobile phones can be used with a hands-free kit.
Alcohol limits in Spain:
Limits: 0.05% blood alcohol level. The limit is 0.03% for those that have held their license for under two years.
Seatbelts in Spain:
All occupants should wear them. Children under 12 years should be seated in the rear and infants in an adapted seat.
Driving age in Spain:
18 years, but usually 21 years to rent a car.
Speed limits in Spain:
- Rural roads: 56-62mph (90-100kph)
- Built-up areas: 31mph (50kph)
- Motorways: 74mph (120kph)
